The Effect of Early Contact on Mother¢¥s Role Acquisition and Attachment Behavior

Abstract
This study examined the effect of early contact on mother¢¥s role acquisition and attachment behavior.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to the development of theory related to the importance of early contact on mother¢¥s role acquisition and attachment behavior.
The study was carried out with a sample of 51 mothers attending the OB & GY O. P. D of a major general hospital in KwangJu city for Antepartal care and admitted for delivery at the same hospital from July 20 to October 14, 1985 and the sample was divided randomly into experimental and control groups.
The results of the study may be summarized as follows:
1. Experimental group, that is, the early contact group¢¥s mother¢¥s role acquisition score would be higher than the control group score. Both group scores increased but there were no significant difference between them (t=1.07).
Early contact group¢¥s attachment behavior score would be higher than the control group score. There was a significant difference between the groups in favor of the experimental group, that is, the early contact group (t=2. 35, p<0.05).
2. Demographic variables such as age, education, family structure, religion, occupation, monthly income, and residential area were tested but no significant difference were found in mother¢¥s role acquisition and attachment behavior.
3. Perceived variables influencing mother¢¥s role acquisition were antepartal care (t=2.10, p<0.05), a period of marriage(F=3.68, p<0.05), marital satisfaction (t=6.23, p<0.01) and confidence in ability to give infant care(t=4.05, p<0.05), and husband¢¥s support(t=2.97, P<0.05). Perceived variables influencing attachment behavior were duration of labor(t=3.12, P<0.05). The longer the labor, the smaller the attachment score.
4. Mother¢¥s role acquisition and self concept were positively related(r=0.371, pThere was no relationship between mother¢¥s role acquisition and attachment behavior(r=0.125), nor between self concept and attachment behavior(r= -0. 028).
